Transportation in Koh Samui

Koh Samui has an excellent public transport network;

·Walk: nice but use a lot of sun screen and be careful in the traffic.

·Bicycle: rental, it is cheap but should be very careful if the traffic is intense

·Motorbike: most common for transportation here. Expect to pay around 200-250 per day depends on the cc (100,125,250). It worth remembering that Samui has some of the highest accident rates in the country though, and has many steep, sandy roads. For your own safety, please use a helmet and do never drive drunk. The local police are beginning to crack down on foreigners riding bikes without safety helmets and fining them accordingly. The 500.-THB fine must be paid immediately at a nearby police station, whilst the police hold onto either your bike, driving license or passport as insurance. If a lot of people are caught at once, the process can take several hours.

·Songtheaw (Pickup taxi): basically, converted pick-up trucks with bench seats. Dozens of them circle the island on various fixed routes all day and fares start at around 20.-THB for a short trip. This is paid at the end of the journey. There are no fixed stops, so flag one down anywhere and ring the bell or bang on the roof to get off. From early morning to 07 P.M. Price 20-50.-THB, but after dark, many songthaews operate as private taxis, so it’s necessary to negotiate a fare before getting aboard. Expect to pay several hundred baht to travel between beaches.

·Car: tourist can rent a car or a jeep. Prices start from about 1,300.-THB a day.

·Taxi: there are also yellow, metered, air-con taxis available. Convenient! But most of drivers are not particularly keen to turn on their meters. Price can be very high, tourist should ask for the price in advance. The prices usually start from about 400.-THB and up to 600-900.-THB for a from Nathon to Lamai or similar distance.

·Motorbike taxi: are considerably cheaper but come with obvious safety issues.

Resort Air-con van: fastest, easiest, most convenient start from 400++ depends on the distance. Advance reservation is required.
